In order to refer to persons, participants have various means of pronominal reference at their choice, analogous to co-present face-to-face interaction, whereby the mediated nature of the chat situation implies an increase in the complexity of the reference extensions of the pronoun being used. To this end, the current project combines methods of Construction Grammar and Interactional Linguistics, and describes from a usage-based point of view how personal, indefinite, and demonstrative pronouns are used in German WhatsApp chats to refer to ‘present’ (= interlocutors) and ‘absent’ persons (= other persons). The subproject focuses on the use of personal pronouns (including ich, du, er, sie, wir, ihr), an indefinite pronoun (man), and demonstrative pronouns (der, die) in WhatsApp chats taken from the Mobile Communication Database 2 (https://db.mocoda2.de/). Applying methods of statistical Network Analysis, the study identifies patterns of practices of pronominal forms of reference in analyzed WhatsApp data, and describes formal and functional properties of pronouns. The study focuses on two formal properties of the pronouns mentioned above: on their collocation profile and their phonographic form. A data-driven analysis of the functional properties of the pronouns addresses the following questions: Which interactional functions do pronouns fulfill within different patterns, and which of these patterns can be interpreted as constructions? How do pronouns contribute to the construals of situations and the positioning of social actors? How is the use of pronouns connected to the circumstances or affordances of WhatsApp communication? Mobile Communication Database 2 (https://db.mocoda2.de/) angewandt.

In order to address question (3), a cross-project exchange with the methodologically compatible sub-project 3 is envisaged. Since subproject 3 analyses face-to-face interactions, the comparison is intended to enable profound claims about the potential role of the communicative setting and the linguistic materiality for pronoun being used in order to establish reference. Teilprojekt 3 angestrebt.
